Elegant: TV personality Kelly Osbourne was among the first to arrive at the 63rd Annual Primetime Emmy Awards held at Nokia Theatre Los Angeles today


Kelly Osbourne led the way today as the stars began to converge on the red carpet ahead of tonight's Emmy Awards.

The Fashion Police panellist, who has had more than her share of sartorial slip-ups in her time, looked slim and spectacular in a full length crimson gown by J Mendel.

The daughter of Sharon and Ozzy Osbourne was on duty for E! News, reporting from the red carpet along with Giuliana Rancic, who arrived in a dramatic scarlet frock.


Red was certainly a popular colour for the evening - despite the risk of blending into the floor - with Rancic, Vampire Diaries star Nina Dobrev in Donna Karen and Glee's Lea Michele in Marchesa all opting for various shades.

The actress says she was immediately taken by the metallic dress, saying: 'I thought it was so beautiful, it's the only one I tried on.'

While the ladies prepare to battle it out in the style stakes, the real competition will of course be on the stage.

Emmy ruler Mad Men is facing a threat from the mobsters and crooked politicians of Boardwalk Empire.

AMC's 1960s Madison Avenue saga, which has earned three consecutive Emmy Awards as best drama series, is competing Sunday with HBO's tale of Atlantic City, New Jersey, schemers making the most of the wild days of Prohibition in the 1920s.

The Sopranos, another HBO show about New Jersey hoodlums, was an Emmy magnet for the cable TV channel that earned 21 trophies during its six seasons.

HBO and AMC's leading men are in a showdown as well. Mad Men star Jon Hamm, shut out three times by Bryan Cranston of Breaking Bad, caught a break when Cranston's series didn't air within the Emmy eligibility period.

But newcomer Boardwalk Empire brought Steve Buscemi into the picture with a first-string nomination for the actor who's been acclaimed for supporting roles.

Also nominated for best drama series are Dexter, Friday Night Lights, Game of Thrones and The Good Wife.

Other contests to watch include best comedy series, with Modern Family trying to repeat last year's win against competitors including Glee and Parks and Recreation.

Steve Carell of The Office is making his last Emmy stand for his fifth and final season as clueless manager Michael Scott, after being snubbed four years in a row.

A new category, which combines the previously separate best miniseries and made-for-TV movie nominees, includes the miniseries Mildred Pierce, with Kate Winslet nominated in the role of an embattled mother, and the movie Too Big to Fail, about the U.S. fiscal crisis in 2008.

In the reality-competition category, perennial also-ran American Idol will take its ninth shot at winning, this time for a season in which it successfully navigated the loss of key judge Simon Cowell.

HBO came into the night with a leading 15 awards earned at the Sept. 10 creative arts awards, followed by PBS with 10, Fox with nine, CBS with seven and NBC with five.

'Boardwalk Empire' captured a leading seven creative arts Emmys, which honor technical achievements and guest stars such as Gwyneth Paltrow, who won for her appearance in 'Glee.'

First-time Emmy producer Mark Burnett, whose string of reality TV hits includes 'Survivor,' was in charge of the ceremony that has played to a dwindling audience.

After hitting an all-time viewership low of 12.3 million in 2008, the Emmys rebounded somewhat in the last two years and drew a 2010 audience of 13.47 million, compared to 26.7 million for this year's Grammys and nearly 38 million for the Oscars.

The A-list ladies were ready to paint the town red as they arrived for the Emmy Awards in Los Angeles tonight.

It was the colour de jour as the actresses rolled out for television's night of nights.

The early buzz was about Michele's sophisticated Marchesa dress: She had the look of a seasoned star instead of starlet.

She wore a plain-front, low draped back with rosette sleeves that really let her work the crowd. She gave fans lined outside the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles a big wink.

There was some high fashion, too, including Julianna Margulies in a strapless Giorgio Armani Prive gown, with a stiff crescent-shaped bustier and embellished with clear oval stones and shimmery paillettes.

Couture is a bit more of a risk and requires confidence. It's a good thing Margulies, who told E! she picked her dress late last night, has that.

Gwyneth Paltrow, in a black-sequin number by Emilio Pucci, also has the presence to pull off the belly baring look she was sporting, but the jury's still out on whether it was too see-through. She said she didn't realize just how sheer it was until she got there.

Red was the hot color, on Kate Winslet in her cap-sleeve Elie Saab - which seemed so covered until she flashed the cleavage - and on Nina Dobrev in Donna Karan and Sofia Vergara in Vera Wang.

The 38-year-old put her toned and trim stomach on show in a daring Pucci dress as she arrived at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles for the Emmy Awards.

Paltrow topped off her dress with platinum earrings by Neil Lane that boasted 7 carats of black-and-white diamonds, two platinum and diamond bracelets with a total of 100 carats, and a platinum ring with 5 carats of diamonds and black onyx.

She had been quick to choose the number, telling E! News host Ryan Seacrest: 'I tried on two dresses and I picked this one.'

And the winner is: The actress presented the gong for best comedy series to Modern Family

But the look was still admired by many, including Parks and Recreation's Amy Poehler who joked: 'I can't stand next to her too long. She looks too good.'

Paltrow earned herself a win even before the ceremony even began.

She took home a gong at the the Creative Arts Emmys on September 11 for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series for her role as Holly Holiday in Glee.

At tonight's ceremony, she presented the award for best comedy series to Modern Family.

Jane Lynch kicked off the 63rd prime time Emmy Awards with a musical extravaganza that saw her do battle with her Glee alter ego Sue Sylvester in a locker room.

But the school setting suddenly looked passe as it became clear that all the new laughs are to be had in the homestead as ABC's Modern Family hit the ground running.

Almost immediately after Lynch was hoisted by the chorus dancers in her silver dress - and apparently, Spanx underwear - the show's stars, director and writers were being called up to the stage at the Nokia theatre in downtown Los Angeles.

Over the course of the night the beloved comedy triumphed in the supporting actor and actress in a comedy categories, scored a win for comedy director and writers, then secured the biggie, outstanding comedy.

Mad Men was safe as the outstanding drama but had it's thunder stolen by ITV drama Downton Abbey, which airs in the US on PBS and scooped four awards.

But first Lynch aped Ricky Gervais, who later joined by video link from London, with an opening gambit that included a spiky reference to Katie Holmes's husband Tom Cruise: 'I'd say something to Katie Holmes but I'm scared of her husband.'

It raised barely a chuckle but luckily it was then straight into the action.

Two Jimmys', Fallon and Kimmel, presented the gong for outstanding supporting actress in a comedy series after a predictably funny skit which saw them wrestle on the stage.

Julie Bowen from Modern Family scooped best supporting actress in a comedy, and thanked her two husbands - Ty Burrell on the show, who secured the equivalent honour in the men's category - and real partner Scott Phillips.

Burrell was presented the laurels by Julianne Margulies, who would later be recognised herself in the dramatic category for best actress.

'Oh, my God, I don't know what I'm going to talk about in therapy next week,' said a shocked-looking Bowen. 'I won something.'

Burrell spoke of his own father in accepting his best supporting actor award.

'I actually got kind of a late start in acting. My dad actually passed away before he ever saw me perform and I can't help but wonder what he would think about all this ... going to work in full makeup,' Burrell said.

Then Ricky got his chance to raise a sardonic chuckle, albeit from a distance of almost 6000 miles.

He started by saying that he's no longer allowed on an awards show after this year's controversial Golden Globes turn, before adding: 'Now when there's an awards show I'm not even allowed on American soil.'

The creator of The Office then explained that his segment was prerecorded and that Fox bosses had threatened to edit out anything offensive so the crowd wouldn't know the difference, which was hilariously followed by a monologue peppered with euphemistic words bleeped over his diction

Then the director of Modern Family, Michael Spiller, was summoned to the podium to give an emotional speech following his honour.

Comedy writers for Modern Family Steven Levitan, and Jeffrey Richman, were hot on his heels.

Jim Parsons of the Big Bang Theory broke the trend by walking away with the metalwork for outstanding actor in a comedy, taken from the clutches of previous winner - a very contrite Charlie Sheen, who offered sincere best wishes to his old show Two and and a Half Man.

Sofia Vergara and Rob Lowe made a sizzling pair to reward the actress who most stimulates funny bones.

Moments earlier, she and her fellow nominees had broken with tradition by jumping up on stage as their names were called, led by Amy Poehler of Parks and Recreation.

After her name was announced they cheerfully handed McCarthy flowers to complement her crown.

'It's my first and best pageant,' she tearfully told the assembled great and good of the television industry.

Before adding: 'I'm from Plainfield, Illinois, and I'm standing here and it's kind of amazing.'

The Amazing Race was honoured in the reality-competition bracket.

The juggernaut that is Jon Stewart and his team were successful once again, and the man himself praised the genetic charms of presenting team Lowe and Vergara.

The new Two and a Half Men team, Jon Cryer and Ashton Kutcher, took to the stage to award the laurels for best drama writing, and made only a limp dig at Sheen.

Friday Night Lights scooped the writing props before Margot Martindale was recognised as best supporting actress in a drama for Justified.


Legendary Martin Scorcese got his hands on his first Emmy for Boardwalk Empire.

Game of Thrones favourite, Peter Dinklage, who plays the charismatic Tyrion Lannister, was a popular winner in the dramatic supporting actor stakes and thanked HBO for allowing the epic, bloodthirsty series to reach our screens.

Katie Holmes was a vision in blue as she honoured the best dramatic actress of 2011, Julianna Margulies, back on the stage again in her white column gown.

The night was peppered with hilarious sketches, including a Jersey Shore montage and celebrities applying for a job at Dunder Mifflin, including Kim Kardashian who sent herself up by not recognising the word 'work' during her interview.

Drew Barrymore escorted the new Charlie's Angels team Annie Ilonzeh, Minka Kelly and Rachael Taylor onto the stage, before making Kyle Chandler's night when he was announced as best male in a drama.

Lynch picked up steam as the night wore on, she told the audience at one point: 'Many people ask me why I'm a lesbian... ladies and gentlemen, the cast of Entourage,' before the suited ensemble of the HBO show strode cockily into the arena.

Britain's own Julian Fellowes flew the flag by taking home the spoils for best writing on a mini-series for Downton Abbey, and managed to get the word 'grandiloquent' into his acceptance speech, before Kate Winslet bagged best actress in a drama for the UK.

She puts in a glamorous turn as former cabaret dancer Lucy Danziger in Boardwalk Empire but in real life it seems Paz de la Huerta doesn't quite live up to that image.

The actress arrived at the Emmys last night looking decidedly disheveled, hitting the red carpet at the Emmy Awards in LA with a bright orange face, poorly styled hair and unflattering lipstick.

In comparison with both her on-screen character, and the rest of the ladies who appeared at the Nokia Theatre, the actress looked a little rough around the edges to say the least.

The actress, who turned 27 earlier this month, has become renowned for having a devil-may-care atttitude - one which has bagged her a modeling contract with Agent Provocateur - however, perhaps a little more attention to her hair and make-up wouldn't go amiss.
And of course a smile would have paid off dividends as well.

However, side from her hair and make up, there was no denying that Miss de la Huerta's ensemble perfectly complimented her stunning figure.

Paz dressed in a pink gown with a slit right up to the top of her thigh on the left leg which she matched with a pair of sparkling heels.

Late last week Paz appeared to be struggling to stay awake when she joined the cast of the HBO show to celebrate the launch of the second season of the Prohibtion saga.

The brunette, who has declared she is 'not an alcoholic', seemed dazed by the glare of cameras as she posed on the red carpet and even grabbed her cleavage to apparently rearrange her dress.

In fact, the Agent Provocateur model, seemed singularly unprepared - or maybe nonplussed - for her moment in the limelight.

It's this kind of behaviour, it seems, that landed Paz a modeling contract with Agent Provocateur.

Creative director of the lingerie brand, Sarah Shotton, told WWD: 'We always try and choose girls that are true Agent Provocateurs, and she definitely is AP through and through. She's got an amazing body and she's naturally very, very sexy.'

Meanwhile Martin Scorcese picked up an Emmy award for outstanding directing for a drama series for Boardwalk Empire.

The pilot episode of the series, which is set in 1930s Prohibition-era Atlantic City when mob bosses ruled that seaside town, was directed by Scorsese.

And the man behind GoodFellas revealed that, if he had his way, he'd like to direct more episodes.

Mr Scorsese: 'I've always dreamed of working on a project where the characters can develop over a period of time.

'You can develop plot, characters... and get more done over a longer period of time. It gives you more license and much more freedom.'

After Jimmy Fallon got rave reviews as host at last year's show, Jane Lynch certainly had her work cut out for her as she took to the stage at this year's 63rd Primetime Emmy Awards, last night.

But by bringing some of the feistiness she uses to play wicked Physical Education teacher Sue Sylvester on her hit show Glee to the table, the 51-year-old comedienne pulled it off.

Jane took the mickey out of everyone from Tom Cruise to Jersey Shore to herself in her array of witty jokes and skits.

The six foot tall funny-woman started off the annual awards show with the typical show sing-a-long skit in the form of a love song, professing her affection to the small screen.

The hypothesis of the all important opening was that television was just one huge TV set.

It opened with Jane meeting a fictional 'President Of Television', where she informed that she would be singing the tribute.

Performing the song entitled, 'TV Is A Vast Wonderland' the actress was seen on the sets of numerous hit shows.

The most comical moment came when she stepped back in time to 60's drama Mad Men, to get flirty with Elizabeth Moss' character Peggy.

'A lots has changed since 1955, women can marry other women. Hi Peggy,' she said giving eyes to the star.

'Does that mean that women don't have to sleep with men anymore to make it to the top?' Moss asked.

To which Lynch seriously replied, 'They still have to do that.'.

Following the number, Jane greeted celebrity guests, including Mad Men's Jon Hamm, Modern Family's Sophia Vergara and famed director Martin Scorcese.

Noting that actress Katie Holmes was also in the crowd, she took the moment to make a dig at her husband Tom Cruise.

'Katie Holmes is in the house as well, I would love to say something about her, but I am afraid of her husband,' she said.

'I found Vinny [Guadagino] living in a walk-in freezer at a pizzeria,' she boasts, as the Jersey Shore housemates are seen going wild in her living room.

'You're one of my chosen ones,' she said tuning Nicole 'Snooki' Polizzi.

The designer behind Jane's custom-made ensembles, David Meister, told the MailOnline.com that he: 'wanted to create simple but glamorous gowns that not only looked great but that she felt great in as well.'

The designer said he had a ball working with the comedienne from the word go.

'Jane is amazing to work with. She is funny and knows what she likes. She is also so open to new ideas,' he said.

He revealed that the collaboration came after he ran into Jane at an Oscar party, last year.

'We got together not long after that thinking she would need a gown for the Emmys,' he explained.

'A few weeks later she was asked to host. It was an honour to be asked to do all of her gowns..... It has been a blast and I think we took Jane into a new glamorous direction.'

Right before Jane took on the top job, she revealed on the red-carpet to E! host Ryan Seacrest how she was feeling ahead of her very first hosting gig.

'I'm feeling pretty well,' she told the host.

'I slept very well last night, which was good. I had a cookie and went to bed. That's how I treated myself.'.
