She would have made quite the statement in red.

So it was probably a sensible move for Justine Thornton to avoid wearing Labour's official colour for the Party conference today - even if her outfit was closer to Conservative blue.

Supporting husband Ed Miliband, the barrister stuck to a more understated shade at the Echo Arena in Liverpool, where the opposition leader delivered a speech.
Justine opted for a simple but elegant indigo sheath dress and nude court shoes.

The capped-sleeve dress, ruched at the waist and slashed at the neck, made the most of her petite frame - and she was clearly pleased with the effect.

Justine, who was educated at Cambridge University, looked relaxed and at ease in the outfit, showing no signs of pressure to look the part, despite glamorous counterparts Miriam Clegg and Samantha Cameron.

She kept her make-up natural and cropped hair simple, teaming the dress with a simple pendant.

Thornton, a former actress who appeared in 1980's show Dramarama and Hardwicke House, wore a similar colour at the Royal Wedding earlier this year and the same nude heels.

Her move was quite a contrast to Nick Clegg's wife Miriam, who last week opted to wear the colour associated with the Liberal Democrat party, in a summery canary yellow Topshop dress and brown leather-effect jacket.

On Sunday, Justine went for a more low-key look of jeans and converse trainers.
But a red and white printed blouse lifted the outfit and kept it from looking too casual.

The 41-year-old's style is clearly quite understated - for her wedding she wore a simple white Temperley dress with no veil.

The couple met in 2004 and have two sons, Samuel and Daniel, but didn't tie the knot until earlier this year.

Before he wed, Ed said: 'I think marriage is a very important institution, but there are stable families that aren't married and stable families that are married.

'My love for Justine is profound and we're a very close unit.'

He was elected as leader of the Labour Party in September after narrowly defeating his brother David.
